im gettin a 76 here soon... i plan on: 1- runnin a 80s caprice bumper on the front, 2- welding firewall forward frame seam, 3- welding front suspension solid, 4- some tubed 14 inch diggers up front, 5- 4 point cage with gastank protector, 6- notching right in front of the bumper shocks, 7- prebending the rear, 8- running the stock rear bumper, 9- welding posi, 10- and running doubled and tubed diggers on back.
how do you all think this will work??

Your weakst points will be tie rod ends, motor mounts, and the pos aluminum housing in front of the differential.
Stock shifters are a problem, too. 4 speeds rip right out of the tranny. On automatics, the stock linkage will bind on the tunnel when the car really starts nosing. Don't know of any problems on the 5 speeds, but I doubt a '76 would have a 5

Torch out the end & replace it with a bolt. Same concept as doing AMC ball joints. One or 2 hits to the wheel & the stock ones will snap. Use a lock nut or double nut on the bolt, so you can leave a little mobility in it.
With our automatic, we used the stock floor shifter. After the car bent, we couldn't put it in reverse any more, because it was jammed on the tunnel. The car was bent pretty badly at that point though. The bumper was sitting higher than the carburetor.
